Review: Alone in the Dark (2004)

Fans of the Alone in the Dark, video game series had mixed reactions about this movie. Slater stars as Edward Carnby, a lone hunter who collects relics while battling strange and inhuman creatures. Aline Cedrac is played by Tara Reid. These characters are much the same in the movie as they are on the series.

The game follows Carby's quest to collect relics and artifacts from the Abkani Indians. His intentions are good in that he wishes to protect humanity from what they create. However, he finds that others want the pieces just as bad, for reasons that are quite the opposite.

He finds many of his childhood friends are disappearing and their families are left wondering what happened. He starts down a road to find many on the same path are ruled by greed, obsession, and a lust for power.

Time is quickly running out and they can't contain the creatures being unleashed.

Ghoulish Details:

This is a pretty good movie to stem from a video game. The characters were suitable for the roles, although not as well as they could've been. The writers had a number of games to squeeze into a single movie and the end result is a decent plot. The intense concentration on effects left too little attention on creating a good plot and better dialogue. This deficiency also means there are a few plot holes in the movie.

There are elements of science fiction in this movie, but it is used sparingly and doesn't remove from the overall presentation that it is a horror movie.
