This song was originally recorded by country legend Red Sovine. It takes a common urban legend of a phantom hitchhiker and reverses it, where the individual driving is the phantom. This is actually a fairly common phenomena.

The song synopsis is fairly straightforward: Phantom 309" is the tale of a ghostly trucker named Big Joe. Big Joe picks up a stranded fellow in need one night, which happens to be the singer, and carries him safely to shelter. The name of his rig is the Phantom 309. The ride isn't unusual, but Joe gives him a dime so he can buy a cup of coffee at the diner where he leaves him.

The fellow goes into the diner and asks about the friendly driver. The regulars are accustomed to the experience and tell him the story of Big Joe and Phantom 309. Big Joe wrecked his rig to save a school bus loaded with children. He died during the crash, but remains to usher hitchhikers to safety.

Legends and lore of ghostly "truck drivers" span the globe and have been reported in China, Austrailia, as well as nearly every state in America. Here are some specifics:

  • Brailes, England- Phantom truck (or lorry)
  • A phantom green and white striped Chevy in rural OK.
  • Phantom truck that tries to wreck other drivers in Clifton, NJ.
  • Phantom black truck in Bloods Point Road, Illinois.
  • Disappearing vehicle in Kailua, Hawaii
