Fraterville, Tennessee 216 Dead from Explosion May 19, 1902 The Fraterville mine was in Campbell County, Tennessee. This is explosion is the worst in this state's history. Just a few minutes after starting the work shift in the mine, a massive explosion occurred. Something had ignited a pocket of methane gas and coal dust. The explosion occurred with such force that many of the miners were dismembered in the duration. The excessive heat also presented a lethal element to the blast. There were some who survived the initial explosion, but were suffocated due to the toxic gases released. Fraterville was a small community and there were women who lost every male relative in this mine's destruction. The precise cause was never determined. All, but 3, of the town's men were killed. There were over 200 widows and around 1,200 children lost their father.
