Van Meter, Pennsylvania 239 Dead from Explosion December 19, 1907 The Darr Mine Disaster is the worst in the history of the state. On December 19, 1907, shortly after the Monongah Disaster, this explosion took the life of 239 men and boys working inside the mine. Despite the fact that the area was cleared by the fire boss the previous day, workers entered the area. The open flames ignited the substances around.
