"A lot of life is dealing with your curse, dealing with the cards you were given that aren't so nice. Does it make you into a monster, or can you temper it in some way, or accept it and go in some other direction?"

Marianna, Pennsylvania

November 28, 1908

154 Dead from Explosion

The explosion that rocked Marianna was a dark mystery at first. Mines #1 and #2 (Rachel and Agnes) erupted in a sudden explosion that killed every worker in the mine except 1. The cause remained a mystery to inspectors and superintendents.

The exact cause is still in debate as the mines had no defect or hazard present. It was reputed to be the best possible mine of the era for workers.

The mine continued to operate, however, until around 1988. The main conveyer caught fire and the entire facility closed afterward. Today, it is one of the most intact coal communities left.
